Original GitHub issue: https://github.com/netbirdio/netbird/issues/5019

Describe the problem

Version 0.61.0 causes the connection to be constantly disrupted. The UI either shows the connection is disconnected or reconnecting, while pinging remote hosts over netbird overlay works. Within 2-3 minutes, the connection is lost, wt0 interface is removed and re-added again, and connection is restored again. Rolling back to 0.69.0 fixes the problem.

OS: Win10x64 22H2

To Reproduce

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Install latest 0.61.0 version
  2. Run ping x.x.x.x -t where x.x.x.x is the remote host over netbird overlay, notice packet drops (around 5%)
  3. Notice how wt0 interface gets disconnected and reconnected,

Expected behavior

The connection should be stable like in the 0.69.0 version.

Are you using NetBird Cloud?

Netbird cloud.

NetBird version

The problem happens in 0.61.0

Is any other VPN software installed?

ZeroTier, original WireGuard app. None of them caused any problems before.

@zaee-k commented on GitHub (Jan 4, 2026):

Installed v0.61.2, the problem with connection still persists but now the tray icon no longer shows "Connecting" infinitely.
I have tried to (via settings) to rename wt0 to something else like wt1, but it didn't changed.

What I have notices in the client.log (via debug) is that repeated line:

2026-01-02T04:43:58+01:00 INFO client/internal/engine.go:1796: Network monitor: detected network change, triggering client restart
2026-01-02T04:43:58+01:00 INFO client/internal/engine.go:1770: restarting engine
2026-01-02T04:43:58+01:00 INFO client/internal/engine.go:1773: cancelling client context, engine will be recreated

Which matches the behaviour I am observing within the Network Adapters window - wt1 interface gets disconnected, disappears and re-appears moment later, establishing new connection. The connection last around 30s - 2min, then drops and the network monitor forces restart again.
My network connection is stable, nothing changes, no IP via DHCP change etc. No idea what causes the network monitor function to detect something changed.

Also, most likely it should be mentioned in separate issue, that the debug bundle should hide or use placeholders for the FQDN/domains etc if "Anonymize sensitive information" is selected, but it still leaves it in the debug logs.

What I have observed so far, is that Network monitor function fires up anything within the network adapters changes. So even if someone is using any software that adds/removes/enables/disables virtual adapters like ZeroTier, VMware virtual network adapter etc, it triggers 'Network monitor' into action. My guess is the Network monitor should only monitor the default WiFI/LAN adapter as this one is used for netbird communication with Internet (maybe detect it via default route/gateway), and ignore all other interfaces.

I've updated to v0.61.2, the problem was still there. I have disabled (via respected app) multiple virtual network adapters (like VMWare internal networks, disconnected from joined ZeroTier networks etc) and so far, the netbird uptime is 50 minutes without a single disconnect (and the wt1 interface is still there). Maybe the Network monitor is too restrictive and triggers at broader amount of events/adapters than it should?

@zaee-k this is an interesting issue, because there was virtually no changes to the network monitor's logic between versions.

Would be great to get debug bundle logs from both versions. You can add the --anonymize flag to the previous command I've shared when running on both versions.
