After installing the Android version from the Play Store on an Intel Chromebook and hitting "Connect" the Chrome browser opens and tries to open localhost:53000 but instantly says "connection refused". Thus I can't register the device as a peer.

It seems that somehow the service is not running (but it says otherwise in the taskbar -> "service running").

Install an android web-browser like Firefox from the Playstore and try again.
This worked for me
