📄 Description

Describe your changes

We have an environment with lots of ephemeral peers; eg. autoscaled kube nodes. Sometimes, though, an administrator might need to connect to one of those via ssh; in that situation, it's much easier if the same hostname that is visible elsewhere (eg. kubectl get node) "just works", rather than having to discover the ephemeral peer name via netbird status -d|grep.

Stack

Checklist

  • Is it a bug fix
  • Is a typo/documentation fix
  • Is a feature enhancement
  • It is a refactor
  • Created tests that fail without the change (if possible)
  • This change does not modify the public API, gRPC protocols, functionality behavior, CLI / service flags, or introduce a new feature — OR I have discussed it with the NetBird team beforehand (link the issue / Slack thread in the description). See CONTRIBUTING.md.

Documentation

Select exactly one:

  • I added/updated documentation for this change
  • Documentation is not needed for this change (explain why)

I don't think ephemeral peers are documented to use suffixed DNS names currently, and it would be strange to me if anyone was relying on this behavior.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved DNS label selection when adding ephemeral peers.
    • Ephemeral peers now use the parsed hostname on the initial allocation attempt and fall back to an IP-derived label only when retrying.
