Describe the problem

When switching between wifi and cellular netbird won't reconnect on android.

To Reproduce

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

Connect with netbird
Turn wifi off to switch to cellular
Netbird keeps reconnecting without success. (dns-resolution stops working)
Turn wifi back on and netbird connects successfully - or disconnect netbird and reconnect

(switching between different wifi networks works fine!)

Same issues for the other direction.

1 Connect with netbird
2. Turn wifi on to switch from cellular
3. Netbird keeps reconnecting without success. (dns-resolution stops working)
4. Turn wifi off and netbird connects successfully - or disconnect netbird and reconnect

Expected behavior

Automatically reconnect on network change, which works in iOS

I’ve been experiencing the same behavior with iOS app. When you you switch from WiFi to cellular, it doesn’t reconnect, but if you disconnect it manually and connect it on the new (Cellular) network, then it works fine, at least up to the time when signal of cellular network disappears and appears again, then the issue happens again. The same will be if you connect to the WiFi network after cellular.

I’m on the latest version of self hosted NetBird.

regarding the issue on Android, we are aware and have already merged a fix which will be released soon.
For iOS I am not aware of an issue when switching networks. I will need to investigate this.

i grabed the new update from the playstore with the fix

"Fix the reconnection issue after the network switch"

If netbird ist connected, switching between wifi and cellular does not break dns-resolution on the device anymore.

Still, netbird does not seem to let go of the interface which handled the inital connection and requires manual reconnect or switching back to the interface used for the inital connection.

it seems that after the latest IOS update it behaves properly and the only one thing is that after some hours of work the VPN connection just turns off completely and you need to reconnect it again.

@pascal-fischer it seems that the problem with IOS app is still there. Maybe it’s not a DNS problem… Sometimes it just loses the connection and hangs in that position. I have about 6 peers and it shows “Connecting” to each of those peers and after that it shows “Disconnected”, and after that again “Connecting” and it does it indefinitely, until you stop it with Dissconnect button and then reconnect it again. Something is wrong in there. So it can’t reconnect automatically after some event. Usually it happens on cellular network when you move through the base stations and it seems that the phone loses the signal sometimes and after that it just stops to work.

To follow up on my last comment and after looking at the logs from the client:

Switching between wifi and cellular on ios and android is fine when the dns-name of netbird points to the same public ip.

In my testing setup the android client was using our internal dns when connected to wifi.
The internal dns was pointing to the local ip of netbird and the public ip was not reachable from the local network

When switching from wifi to cellular, the netbird android app was still trying to connect the local ip.
I dont know if this is the expected behaviour, since i cant reproduce it on iOS.

Edit: In another test, the public ip was reachable from the local network and reconnecting was also working fine.

I have not yet fixed anything in that regard on iOS so I would expect the issue to still be there. I tried a few things to re-establish the connection but without success. I will need time to look deeper into this to find out why the reconnection is failing.

this only works reliably on ios, when connecting with via settings -> vpn.

if i have the app open und switch between cellular and wifi the connection can't be reestablished.

can you check if you can turn on the vpn on android in the settings?

I am failing to reproduce this on the latest GrapheneOS (Android 15), the reconnect takes up to half a minute, but succeeds when switching (both ways) between WiFi and mobile.

Can you share the version of Android do you have? possibly with phone brand and model

I can confirm the problem with

Google Pixel 8a (Android 15)
Samsung Tab S8 (Android 14)

Changing between Networks leads to broken network connection in most (but not every) case.
In one case I observed that the connection repaired itself after 2 minutes (or so did not measure time). In other cases the connection remained broken.
In one case manual disconnect did not work. I had to change the WIFI Network. Once I changed that, the disconnect (and the following reconnect) did work again.
In one case I was connected to a WLAN without internect access (Pixel 8a with mobile data enabled). There the access to the internet was blocked (no exit node configured).

FYI: Last week, we released the first testing version of the native Android client (0.1.0). You can sign up for it at https://play.google.com/apps/testing/io.netbird.client . Feel free to retest whatever issues you had with it before and please confirm whether they are still present.

It involves no functional changes (for now) and updates the underlying NetBird client library to the latest version, possibly solving a lot of issues. As a side-effect Exit Node feature is now also working on Android.

Updated to the Beta-Channel in my Pixel 8a (Updated to Android 16). No improvements visible. All my issues still remain!
So the Android Client is not fit for Road-Warrior use.

Connected to WIFI on site 1. Site 1 and site 2 reachable with both the Pixel 8a (Android 16) and TabS8 (Android 15 + Samsung Stuff)
Went to site 2 and connected to that WIFI:
Both client apps report "connecting" and not connected. Site 1 not reachable. Internet Access (not using Exit Nodes!) degraded. It works partially but not complete (Routing-problems?)

On the TabS8 I had to reset the connection. The disconnect button did not respond. What worked was to switch "always on" in the VPN-settings of Android. (Or reboot the device)

Let me check that.

I went back to site 1 and site2 now was reachable from at least the Pixel 8a.
Site1 is behind double NAT - so maybe relay may be an issue ...

Will post my findings then.

You can see it on a server or desktop client, but not in the mobile version.

netbird status --detail is the command you can run on the other side of the connection.

At site1: Pixel8a and TabS8 connected to WIFI and from there to my Netbird Environment.
Now walked to site2 and connected to that WIFI there.
This time the Pixel8a connected immediately.
TabS8 still not connected after 7 minutes. Disconnect-Button not working/active.

I now also brought my laptop with me. (Linux: Tuxedo OS - an Ubuntu derivate).
Connected to site1 with no problem.

Now - after 14 Minutes still no connection from the TabS8 to Site1. Internet Connection via WIFI seems to work. (Tested with Youtube)
But not fully functional. After I killed the VPN-Connetion via the Android-Settings I got Notifiations from Youtube and K9 - should have happened sooner.
Now the App shows "disconnected" and I was able to connect. Connected immediately and now 4 of 4 clients are connected. Also site1 is reachable now.

This time the Pixel8a connected immediately. TabS8 still not connected after 7 minutes. Disconnect-Button not working/active. I now also brought my laptop with me. +1 this continually happens. Hoping for a fix since I've had to revert to using tailscale app just on my phone. I can also add that a lot of the time it gets stuck in connecting and the only way to reconnect is to go into the VPN setting on the phone and hit disconnect there. If logs would be helpful I can provide if needed.

On disconnection, before trying to reconnect, does the client sunsets the private DNS prior to trying to reconnect? If so, is it possible to try to flush DNS?
