Describe the problem

I am using the beta version 0.1.1 android app of netbird, and it is occasionally disconnecting on its own despite having “always on” enabled for the VPN profile.

To Reproduce

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Install beta version of netbird in google play
  2. Launch and connect app to birdnet
  3. Enable “always on” for the vpn profile in android's settings.
  4. Wait until it disconnects (usually within hours).

Expected behavior

To remain connected unless manually disconnected.

Are you using NetBird Cloud?

Yes using netbird cloud

NetBird version

0.1.1 beta android app

Is any other VPN software installed?

ProtonVPN is installed, but it's disabled everywhere, including its android VPN profile.

Shared logs files

netbird-1750217480214.log.txt
netbird-1750217958745.log.txt

Additional context

Both of the provided log files were created moments after the disconnects occurred.

I am using GrapheneOS.

Have you tried these troubleshooting steps?

  • [ x ] Reviewed client troubleshooting (if applicable)
  • [ x] Checked for newer NetBird versions
  • [ x] Searched for similar issues on GitHub (including closed ones)
  • [ x] Restarted the NetBird client
  • [ x] Disabled other VPN software
  • [ x] Checked firewall settings

Hello! Thank you for the logs. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any issues in them. I’m wondering if the status indication might be incorrect and the service is actually alive in the background. Could you try reaching a peer that should be online the next time you detect the issue?

Hi,

The indication is correct because it's the operating system highlighting that the connection is broken, not just netbird app.

Furthermore, I tried to see if I could connect to a peer this morning when it occurred, and I wasn't able to.

@LinuxMason
Understood, thank you. What is the Android API level on your device?

I'm seeing the same thing on the Android Beta (latest version) but even without using the always-on feature. I turn the netbird tunnel on, and after a while with roaming between mobile and wifi APs it just silently disconnects, never tried to re-connect. Latest updated on Pixel 8 Pro.

I believe I'm encountering the same issue as well. I recently started using Netbird but have noticed that the application doesn't always seem to be connected, I haven't pinpointed the exact case yet. Theories:

  • Roaming between wifi/cellular
  • Restarting the phone

Additionally, I don't know if this is related or my own issues, but I seem to keep getting not only disconnected, but fully signed out, so I need to re-login and register my device. I found this issue when searching for my symptoms, if this is not related to this issue I'd be happy to file a new issue. (I'm in the troubleshooting/debugging phase right now)
