Describe the problem

After installing Netbird on Windows, the netbird UI program appears installed. There is a shortcut on the desktop and 2 netbird processes running. However the icon does not show in the tray and launching the program from the shortcut or windows menu does nothing. To connect the machine to the netbird account, command prompt was used (netbird up) which allowed for authentication. Everything seems to work normally for connectivity, but the UI program does not function.

To Reproduce

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Install netbird on Windows.
  2. Double click on netbird shortcut on desktop
  3. Nothing happens.
  4. Look in tray for Netbird icon.
  5. It's not there.

Expected behavior

After install, I expected the Netbird icon to be in the tray so I could right click and select "connect" to do the authorization. Saving that, I expected to be able to launch the Netbird UI from the desktop or start menu.

Are you using NetBird Cloud?

Netbird Cloud

NetBird version

54.0

Is any other VPN software installed?

No

Additional context

Networking appears to operate as expected, and the peer is seen in the cloud dashboard.
The 3 machines that exhibited this behavior are:
Win11Pro 23H2
Win11Pro 24H2
Win11Home 24H2

The UI program worked as expected on other peers installed the same day.

Have you tried these troubleshooting steps?

  • [n/a ] Reviewed client troubleshooting (if applicable)
  • [ yes] Checked for newer NetBird versions
  • [ yes] Searched for similar issues on GitHub (including closed ones)
  • [ yes] Restarted the NetBird client
  • [ n/a] Disabled other VPN software
  • [ n/a] Checked firewall settings
